Week 1
Mind Map
I explored A lot of different themes, graphics, and mechanics which I could do for my specialism project. For the themes I wanted to do a Fantasy theme, however I also explored the possibility of making a Sci-fi character as well, in the end I went with a Dark Fantasy Wisp character. I also looked at different game graphics to figure what style I wanted my character to look like, for instance if they were going to look realistic or if it was a cartoon character. I also looked at different possibilities I could do with said character in VR like if they would be in a game with actual mechanics like Resident Evil 4 with the gun mechanics, or I could make a character with little mechanics like VR-chat where the character normally has nothing special except different facial expressions. lastly I looked at different Game Genres if I wanted to go a step further and make the game, also depending on the genre could impact how I want the graphics to look and the character, for instance Souls like games works better with realistic and body morphed characters, then cartoony and happy looking characters
In the end I when with a VR-chat Anime style character, as the main focus on this project was my modelling skills. Also I wanted to get the character to a high standard so adding a lot of mechanics to the character might make the model a lower quality, however if I have the spare time VR-chat allows creators to add whatever mechanic they can make for there avatar. But it might be something small like a light source or equipping different clothing
Mood Board
I made a mood board to which I added a lot of different themes to get a sense of I want to make, I added stuff like different kinds of models, for instance some look more anime like/colourful whilst I have found some models which still look anime like but they use darker colours to make them more realistic/mature to the brighter models. I also added different models from game like Persona 5, Genshin Impact, League of legends and Honkai Star-rail. I also looked at V-tubers as they use models which are close to VR-Chat models, I added a variety of them as they each have different character themes from each other which impacts how the model looks. I also looked at VR Games like Resident Evil 4 VR for the Oculus and the PSVR2 port of Resident Evil 8. Lastly I added some images from Anime like Overlord (Albedo) and Rising of the Shield Hero (Raphtalia) because I am doing an Anime VR Character
If I could improve the mood board I would say that I would also add some images of non-anime VR-Chat Avatars to get the sense of different avatars I could make
Gant Chart
I tried to be as organised as possible as would make it easier for me later down the line on when things need to be completed, so I made the months stand out more so I know when I am nearing the end of the month, as well as the last days of the week so I know when the last day is to complete that part of the project. I coloured the projects I am not working on with red so I know what I need to start that week, projects I am working on in yellow so that I know what I need to finish by the end of the week , projects in green are completed so that I don't need to continue working on it. The only thing I could do to make it even more organised would be figuring out what I need to model each week.
I know its very small to see but you can still see the time layout I used to make it easier for myself
I gave the longest amount of time to modelling as that is what my specialism project is mostly about and I want to make sure that the model is high quality as well as there are a lot of piece on the character that need to be modelled. the next longest is rigging as I don't Know how complicated it would be to rig a character for VR as well as any facial and hand animations. Lastly I gave a lot of time to texturing as well as I want the character to look very high quality. Hopefully I can stay on track or if I manage to get ahead, then I would have to figure out where to delicate the spare time, for instance to improve on the texture if they don't look the way I want them to, or if the rigging was done incorrectly
Good start with lots of relevant research so far.
