Overview

Overview – For my specialism project, I wanted to make a 3D Model of a character.  Once I have completed the 3D Model, I will fully UV Unwrap the model and texture it.  Then I will rig the model so that it is able to move and will also animate the character to have different finger animations and face expressions. I intend to make the model compatible with VR so that the player can control the 3D model of the character. So basically, I will be making a VR Chat character.

Methodology - As for the software I will be using; I will be using Blender to make the character model as well as unwrapping the character and rigging. I will also be using Blender for animating the character’s face expressions and finger movements. For the texturing, I will be using Photoshop, and for importing the, I will be trying Unity. However, as I don’t know unity very well, I don’t know how well it will go, so as a backup I will try importing the model to Unreal so that I can then import it to VR Chat.

Desirables – For what I want to get out of this project, I will try to make concept art for the outfits and the characters hair. I would like to try to draw the face but as I am taking on quite a lot of work, including using new techniques and methods I have not used before, I have decided to not draw it and get a reference that I will try to model and change. I will like to get skills in modelling human like characters as I am not that confident in making humanoid characters.

The other skills I would like to get out from this project is figuring out how to Unwrap characters and how to properly texture them, also how to make character’s hair. I would also like to know how to rig VR models as the rig needs to be almost perfect because the player would be able to see any problems/mistakes up close, I am also sure that I need to use figure bones to animate the figure expressions. As for the face expressions, I am not too sure how I would make them, but my first consideration is to use Blender however, that is something I will also be learning. I feel that the hardest part would be making the character able to be controlled in VR as I am not very sure how I this is to be achieved, all I know is that Unity has a plug-in which makes it easy to import the model into VR Chat.  However, I don’t know if it makes the model VR Compatible for me.

Other than that, if I have the time, I will be looking to add different tools that the character can use in VR which might require me to learn some coding as well as modelling any of the items that I would add in. There might be a particle system in Unity that I can play with as well to add as a tool.

 

Deliverables – For the end result for my Specialism Project I would like the Character to be fully imported into VR Chat and working with all Animations. The Model is fully textured and maybe a few tools that the player can play with. Basically, what should be handed in:
